The Way of Tea · Tea Ritual
Tea Meditation
Tea and meditation share one taste. Brewed in mindfulness, each motion slows, the breath deepens, and an ordinary cup becomes a moment of rest.
Breathe with the cup
Before you lift the cup, follow the breath below for a few rounds. Let the circle slow your breathing.
Six steps of the ritual
- 01
Still the mind
Sit upright, set the phone aside. Three deep breaths to settle before you touch the tea.
- 02
Warm the vessels
Rinse pot and cups with hot water — warming the tools is warming the mind.
- 03
Awaken the tea
Add the leaves, tilt to admire their colour, breathe in the dry fragrance — waking the tea and the senses.
- 04
Savour the aroma
Pour, raise the cup to your nose, take in the whole fragrance before the first sip.
- 05
Abide
Sip slowly, let the taste spread across the tongue. No hurry — just stay with the cup and the breath.
- 06
Return
Set the cup down, listen to the sweet aftertaste rising. A moment of gratitude before the next pour.
茶禅一味
Tea and meditation, one taste
“Cha chan yi wei” (茶禅一味) — an old Zen saying: tea and meditation are of one flavour. Both teach the same simple thing: be wholly present, right here, right now.
The ancients drank tea not to quench thirst but to wake up. The singing of the water, the rising aroma, the warmth of the cup in hand — each sensation is an invitation back to the present.
At TEA & ZEN, we believe every cup is a small practice: slow by a beat, breathe one deep breath, and let the noisy world settle for a moment.
Have a cup of tea.
