West Lake Lotus Tea: The Pinnacle of Vietnamese Scented Tea

Among Vietnam's scented teas, West Lake lotus tea stands at the summit — a refined heritage so painstaking it is called the “first among teas”. Why is one tea held so precious?

What is West Lake lotus tea?

It is green tea (often the curled “móc câu” style) scented with Bach Diep lotus from Hanoi's West Lake — a hundred-petalled, especially fragrant variety. The essence lies in the “lotus rice”: the tiny white grains at the tip of the stamen, holding the bloom's most fragrant part.

Why is it so rare?

Bach Diep lotus blooms only for a few summer weeks, and must be picked at dawn while still dewy. Each kilo of tea needs over a thousand blooms for their lotus rice. The scenting is repeated many times, the rice renewed each round — this labour is its value.

The traditional scenting art

The tea is layered with lotus rice over several days — scented, lightly dried, then scented again, up to seven times. This lets the lotus fragrance soak deep into the leaf while keeping the tea's backbone, never smothering it.

Its distinctive taste

The liquor is green-gold and clear. The lotus aroma is high, low and settled — not sharp but faint and slowly spreading. The taste is soft, with a cool sweet finish. A well-brewed cup brings a stillness all its own.

How to brew and enjoy

Use water around 80–85°C so the lotus aroma isn't shocked. Rinse gently, steep 2–3 minutes for the first infusion. Sip slowly, breathing in the scent before each mouthful — the moment lotus and tea become one.

Spotting genuine lotus tea

Tea scented with real lotus rice has a soft, natural, lasting aroma with no harsh perfume note. Chemically scented tea is intensely fragrant at first but fades fast and leaves a “shock” to the nose. The real scent deepens the more you drink.
