Ancient Shan Tuyet Tea: A Treasure of Vietnam's Highlands

On peaks above 1,000 metres in Hà Giang, Yên Bái and Sơn La grow tea trees centuries old. Their leaves are veiled in fine white down, soft as snow — this is Shan Tuyet tea. More than a tea, it is a treasure of Vietnam's north-western mountains.

What is Shan Tuyet tea?

“Shan” means mountain; “Tuyet” is the white down covering the young buds. Shan Tuyet is plucked from ancient wild tea trees on the high mountains — trunks as wide as a person's embrace, roots deep in mineral-rich soil. Altitude, mist and age give it a flavour few regions can match.

Why is ancient Shan Tuyet so rare?

Old trees bud slowly and yield little, growing in places reachable only by hand. The higher and colder, the more the leaf stores nutrients and aroma. A thick coat of white down marks a strong young bud — and lends the liquor its golden sheen.

Its distinctive taste

The liquor runs golden and clear. It opens with a gentle astringency that turns swiftly into a deep, lingering sweetness at the throat. The aroma calls up honey, wild flowers and a wisp of mountain smoke.

Styles made from Shan Tuyet

From the same ancient leaf, makers craft many styles: green Shan Tuyet (fresh and jade), red Shan Tuyet (oxidised, honeyed), white tea (barely processed, delicate) and Shan Tuyet pu-erh (pressed, finer with age).

How to brew Shan Tuyet well

Use water at 85–90°C, about 4–5g per 150ml. Rinse the leaf quickly to wake it, then steep 20–40 seconds for the first infusion, lengthening each time. Fine old-tree tea stays sweet through 6–8 infusions.

Recognising and storing it

Genuine tea shows natural white down, a soft (not harsh) aroma, clear liquor and a clear sweet return. Keep it dry and sealed, away from sun and strong odours. Shan Tuyet pu-erh prefers an airy place to keep ageing.
